An elderly woman was caught on tape stealing a tablet computer somebody left behind at the Panera Bread in the Burlington Plaza Shopping Center in Massachusetts in September.
Burlington Police released the surveillance camera footage yesterday with the hope that someone will be able to identify the thieving senior citizen.
The video footage, uploaded in two parts, is dated September 11 of last year. It begins showing a man and woman taking their seat at a table, then a third woman joining them. The third woman is the tablet stealer.
The tablet, which was a Samsung Galaxy model, was inside a Vera Bradley case and left next to a window. It should be noted that the women also appear to have been carrying Vera Bradley handbags.
The first woman in the scene seems to notice the tablet first. Then, shortly thereafter, the other woman walks over to the window and nonchalantly picks up the tablet as if it was her own. She tucks it under the table, then perhaps finding nowhere to stash it, puts it on an empty chair, then her other items on top of it.
Eventually, the woman takes the case and slips it into her handbag. She zips it up and fusses with her things and resumes her meal before the video cuts out.
The owner of the tablet, Regina Sanchez of Windsor, Conn., explained that she had won the device in a contest. The small business owner had just finished a meeting in the restaurant when she left it behind.
The tablet was handed in to the police and returned to its rightful owner after the video was released online. None of the people shown in the video was the one to turn it in, however, and police are still looking to find them.
